Memorial Day Weekend Outlook UPDATED 12:15 AM EDT, May 26, 2013 UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Fred Allen | The weather will remain stormy across the central and northern Plains through the holiday weekend while dark skies spread into the Midwest and Ohio Valley. Although the rain is much needed, the soggy weather could put a damper on outdoor barbecues in the Northwest and northern California. WeatherBug Meteorologist Katie Ferrier has the latest in her exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook video. Today: Just like Saturday, spring downpours and a few clusters of fresh thunderstorms will ruin a few outdoor plans and barbecues from Kansas all the way to the U.S. and Canada border today. The greatest threat for thunderstorms carrying very large hail and damaging wind gusts will be in Nebraska and Kansas from Interstate 70 to Interstate 80, as well as from southeastern Montana into the western Dakotas. Additional thunderstorms will spread across the Lower Mississippi Valley, West Texas Plains, and Upper Midwest into the far western Ohio Valley this afternoon and evening. Thankfully though, they won't be attached to severe weather. The only other weather hiccups across the U.S. will be found in New England and the Northwest, where light rain, showers, and a few thunderstorms will dampen the holiday mood. Meanwhile, California, the Southwest, central Great Basin, and Florida to the Great Lakes will see plenty of sunshine and comfortable temperatures. The warmest temperatures will be found from southern California to South Carolina and Florida, where 80s and 90s will dominate. In stark contrast, 40s, 50s, and 60s will cover large portions of the Northern-Tier, including the Northwest, Great Lakes, and New England. Memorial Day: The weather pattern will remain in gridlock to end the extended weekend. More afternoon showers and storms will soak the central and northern Plains, Midwest, and Middle Mississippi Valley. Unfortunately, a few of the thunderstorms will become severe, packing large hail, damaging wind gusts, and even a few tornadoes. Rain showers will sock the Northwest with downpours spreading as far south as Oakland, Calif., and San Francisco. Meanwhile, the Southwest, Deep South and East will have another stellar day to conclude the Memorial Day holiday weekend with bright sunshine and great pool and picnic weather. The warmest weather will stretch across the South with 90s warming the Southwest and 80s stretching from California to the Southeast. Conversely, air conditioners won`t be needed across the Rockies and northern New England with highs in the 60s.
