Storms Will Rumble in Ohio Valley, Southern Appalachians
UPDATED 5 PM EDT, June 24, 2012
UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Seth Carrier
Severe weather returns to the weather menu in the Ohio Valley and East Coast today following a quiet weekend start. More storms will pound the Upper Midwest as well.
A low pressure streaking across southern Canada will send a cold front south into the Ohio Valley. Warm, moist air ahead of the front will collide with cooler, drier air in the wake of the front to produce severe storms along Interstate 80 from Pennsylvania into northern Ohio.
Places like Detroit, Cleveland, Pittsburgh and Buffalo, N.Y., may have to bring outside activities indoors as these storms move through. Wind gusts in excess of 60 mph and hail the size of golf balls are possible.
At the same time, warm and humid air across the Southeast will slide northward into the Appalachians ahead of this same cold front. The muggy air mass will be lifted over the mountains, leading to the development of strong to severe thunderstorms. Large hail of golf ball to baseball size will be the greatest threat for cities such as Columbia, S.C., Charlotte and Raleigh, N.C.
Not to be outdone, a thunderstorm cluster heading into Illinois could produce large hail and wind gusts to 60 mph as it moves south and east. Places such as Springfield and Urbana, Ill., will have to keep a close eye to the sky for threatening weather.
While not widespread, a few severe storms will regenerate ahead of the same front along the populated Interstate 95 corridor Monday morning through midday. Gusty winds and hail will be the main threats in places like Boston, New York City, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., and Richmond, Va.
Much cooler, breezy and less humid weather will follow Monday afternoon into much of early next week.
