By WeatherBug's Matthew Mehallow | The second day of the work week will be active for parts of the Plains and Southeast, where showers and thunderstorms will light up the skies. Warm and dry conditions are on tap for much of the West as high pressure remains in control while humid weather persists across the East Coast.

The Central Plains will be in for a rough day as severe thunderstorms rumble through. A strengthening low pressure will create conditions ripe for a severe weather outbreak. As a result, scattered thunderstorms capable of producing heavy rain, damaging winds, and large hail could pepper areas from McCook, Neb., across the Red River into Dallas. Southerly winds will prime the atmosphere for these storms with highs reaching into the 90s across Southern Plains from San Antonio to Wichita Falls, Texas.
Tropical Depression Beryl will continue to slide off the Carolina coast and become a tropical storm again. It will be bringing tropical downpours and gusty winds to the Southeast Coast, although the ongoing rain will be a welcome sight as much of the Southeast remains in severe drought. Extensive scattered showers and thunderstorms will roam the rest of the southeast from northern Florida to Charlotte, N.C. Widespread 80s and even lower-to-middle 90s will have air conditioners humming from the Florida Gulf Coast to southern New England.
Elsewhere, the Great Lakes and northern New England will see mostly sunny skies with afternoon highs warming into 60s and 70s. The majority of the Western U.S. will remain dry and enjoy sparkling late-May sunshine with the far Northwest corner being the exception to the rule. Seattle, for instance, could see a stray afternoon shower or two.
Cool, showery weather will rule the Northern Tier and Northern Rockies with highs in the 50s and 60s. Highs will zoom into the 60s and 70s along coastal California with 80s and 90s inland. Triple-digit heat will roast the interior Southwest with highs in the upper 90s and 100s.
