Race Across America Eyes Finish Line
UPDATED 9:15 PM EDT, June 24, 2012
UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Seth Carrier
The 31st annual 3,000-mile Race Across America (RAAM) is winding down as the racers hit the finish line in Annapolis, Md. In fact, solo rider Len Forkas has just completed his journey across the U.S. by winning the Male 50-59 age group!
The WeatherBug Meteorology Team is providing 24/7 in-kind weather forecast support to Len and his crew. Earth Networks, WeatherBug`s parent company, is also providing Len`s team complimentary access to its web-based weather visualization and alerting tool and iPhone application.
Len crossed the finish line in Annapolis, Md. at 8:33 p.m. this evening, thereby completing the 3,000-mile race in 11 days, 4 hours, and 47 minutes. He finished first out of 11 competitors in his age group, and his average speed for the entire race was 11.14 mph. Len enjoyed dry weather on his last day of the race, but barely missed a thunderstorm that threatened to drench him during his final few miles.
Forkas, 53, is participating in RAAM to raise funds and awareness for the charity he found in 2002 called Hopecam. The charity connects homebound children undergoing treatment for cancer and other life-threatening illnesses with their friends and schoolmates using high-speed internet web cameras.
"Hopecam seeks to bridge the lonely divide between homebound children and their friends at school during this frightening time. Staying connected to school significantly reduces the stress of re-entry when treatment is completed and children resume a normal life," says the charity`s website.
