Today's Weather Outlook
7:45 AM EDT, May 31, 2012
By WeatherBug's Matthew Mehallow
Large parts of the U.S. are in for another day of active weather as the short workweek slowly wraps up. Severe storms will roar through the Lower Mississippi and Ohio valleys while the Northeast will enjoy dry and comfortable weather.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Todd Nelson has the latest in this exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
A strengthening low pressure system will move east out of the Plains, producing an active day of severe weather from the Southern Plains into the Ohio Valley today. This will trigger severe storms capable of producing large hail and damaging winds from Waco, Texas, to Louisville, Ky. Farther north, steady rain will drench the Great Lakes region from Chicago to Detroit where the rain will keep highs from exiting the 50s. In front of the storm, highs should surge in the 80s and 90s from the Southern Plains into the Lower Mississippi Valley.
High pressure will take over the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast, producing pleasant weather. Bright sunshine will prevail from Washington D.C., to Portland, Maine. Temperatures will be a tad warmer as afternoon highs rise into the 70s and 80s in the mid-Atlantic and 60s in northern New England.
Scattered showers and thunderstorms could pepper areas from the Mobile, Ala., to Charlotte, N.C. These thunderstorms could produce damaging winds and hail. Locations that receive a heavy shower or two could pick up a quick quarter-inch of rain. Even with the rain and clouds, temperatures across the Southeast will be relatively warm, with upper 80s and low 90s common.
Elsewhere, sunshine should be the rule for much of country, except for the western High Plains where scattered afternoon showers will pop up from Montana to Colorado. A few thunderstorms may even fire late in the afternoon along some of the highest peaks. Showers could put a damper on outdoor plans in places like Seattle where temperatures will rise into the 60s and 70s.
Mostly sunny skies with temperatures in the 60s and 70s will be prevalent from the Northern tier to the Central Plains. Highs along the California coast will hit the 60s and 70s with 80s and 90s inland. Triple-digit heat will roast the interior Southwest with highs in the upper 90s and 100s.
