Weekend Weather Outlook

By WeatherBug's Matthew Mehallow | Following a busy week, a quieter weekend is in store for large stretches of the U.S. A few thunderstorms will tear across the northern tier, and the Gulf Coast will need to keep an eye on a developing tropical system. Sunday will bring plenty of scattered storms to the East, but no big outbreaks.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Katie Ferrier has the latest in her exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
Today:
Summer heat will roast the Plains as sunshine will be the rule for most, excluding the Northern and Central Plains where scattered afternoon showers will pop up across the Dakotas and into Iowa and Minnesota. Temperatures will warm into the 80s and 90s across the nation`s heartland, from Houston to Minneapolis.
Sunshine and seasonable temperatures for this time of year will be the story for much of the Southeast. However, scattered showers and thunderstorms could pepper areas along the Gulf Coast from New Orleans, to Tallahassee, Fla. Locations that receive a heavy shower or two could pick up a quick quarter-inch of rain. Even with these isolated storms, temperatures across the Southeast will be relatively warm, with mid-80s to around 90 common.
Across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, a cold front that pushed through on Friday will provide some relief from the high heat. Temperatures will be held back a bit from the 90s that cooked the same locations during the mid-week. Instead, more pleasant 70s and 80s will be found from Burlington, Vt., to Washington, D.C.
Elsewhere, most of the nation`s weather will stay quiet. The Great Lakes and all the way to the Desert Southwest will see mostly sunny skies. Highs in the Great Lakes will rise into the 70s and 80s. The California coast will see temperatures in the 60s and 70s, with 80s and 90s inland. Showers and clouds will be on tap in the Northwest in locations such as Seattle where highs rise into the 60s. The interior Southwest will remain hot and dry with highs warming into the triple digits.
Sunday:
Sunday will be a carbon copy of today weather-wise across the U.S.
Across the Plains, mostly sunny and hot conditions will cover the region from Texas to the Dakotas. With bright sunshine, temperatures will warm into the mid-70s across the Dakotas, to near 100 degrees in south Texas.
A meandering cold front will bring scattered thunderstorms to the East on Sunday, with the potential for gusty winds and heavy rain to interrupt an otherwise serene weekend. Florida will also be targeted for storms capable of damaging winds and hail. Temperatures will be very warm with highs surging into 90s from New Orleans to Charlotte, N.C.
Showers may fall in the afternoon across Seattle and the Pacific Northwest. The Intermountain West and Northern Rockies will also see mostly sunshine and hot conditions as highs rise into the 90s. In general though, the West looks sunny and warm with highs in the 60s and 70s along the coast. Farther inland, temperatures will increase quickly, with 90s and triple digits in the California deserts and Southwest.
