UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Fred Allen | The more than a week-long record-shattering major heat wave will be the main weather story across the U.S. east of the Rocky Front Range once again today. The only weather interruptions will be found along the Rockies Spine, Southeast and in the northern Plains to Midwest, where storms will ruin a few outdoor plans.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Gretchen Mishek has the latest in his exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
Garnering the weather spotlight is the epic heat wave blanketing the eastern and southern U.S. Early-July sunshine will boost temperatures into the upper 90s to lower 100s in places such as Nashville, Tenn., Atlanta, Charlotte, N.C., Washington, D.C., and New York City. Add in high humidity, and it will be unbearable for most, especially at-risk groups including pets, young children and the elderly.
Fortunately, relief in the form of a smattering of thunderstorms will knock temperatures back briefly from the Tennessee Valley to the central Gulf Coast.
The Plains heat won`t be going anywhere as strong high pressure remains parked across the central U.S. The end result will be the thermometer rushing into dangerous levels, though a few severe thunderstorms could provide relief this afternoon from Sioux Falls, Iowa, to Green Bay, Wis. Large hail and damaging wind gusts will be the biggest concerns. Even so, the mercury will climb into the 90s and lower 100s from Texas to South Dakota, with cooler 80s common along the Northern-Tier.
The intense heat will continue at full throttle across the Mid-Mississippi and Ohio valleys today. In an all too common trend, temperatures will soar into the upper 90s and lower 100s, flirting with many records from St. Louis to Cincinnati and Detroit.
In a tale of polar opposites, the Western U.S. will be full of showers and thunderstorms along the Rocky Mountain Spine. Meanwhile, the West Coast along the Interstate 5 corridor will continues its cool streak with residents from the Desert Southwest to Great Basin laying claim to the best weather across the U.S. Temperatures will range from the cool 60s and 70s along the Interstate 5 corridor to the steamy 90s and 100s from Arizona to Washington`s Columbia Basin. An arc of cool 60s and 70s will be the rule from New Mexico to eastern Montana.
