UPDATED By Weatherbug's Matthew Mehallow | The main weather story will remain the dangerous heat blanketing the southern Plains all of the way to New England. The only other weather interruptions will be a smattering of showers and thunderstorms from Texas to the eastern Great Lakes.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Todd Nelson has the latest in her exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
Intense heat will once again be the main weather action item across large stretches of the southern and eastern U.S. today. It will feel like mid-summer in places such as Dallas, Nashville, Tenn., Atlanta, and Raleigh, N.C., as hot temperatures and high humidity make it feel stifling at times. High temperatures in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast will also be accompanied by high humidity, meaning heat indices will top out above the century mark this afternoon from Washington, D.C., to Boston.
For most across the Plains, a sunshine-filled sky will be common from Texas to the Dakotas. Even so, a few showers and thunderstorms are possible across the eastern Lone Star State. The mercury will warm into the mid-70s across the Dakotas, with seasonable 80s covering the Plains, except steamy lower 90s for South Texas.
The Mid-Mississippi and Ohio valleys will bake with bright sunshine and high humidity. Some relief will be felt, however, as a cold front slices through this afternoon. The end result will be a line of showers and thunderstorms, some of which could be powerful. In the more intense storms, hail and gusty winds will be the biggest concerns. The thermometer will spike into the 90s ahead of the cold front from Louisville, Ky., to Cleveland.
Meanwhile, the western Great Lakes to the Pacific Northwest and Desert Southwest will see plenty of sunshine today.
Temperatures will range from the refreshing 70s and lower 80s across the northern Great Lakes to the sizzling triple digits for interior southern California and Arizona deserts. In fact, Phoenix could see near-record highs today with a temperature of about 113!
