UPDATED By WeatherBug Sr. Meteorologist, James West | Post-firecracker-hot temperatures and a smattering of dangerous thunderstorms will be the norm again for those living east of the Rockies that are heading back to work today. The only other weather hiccup will be found along the Rocky Mountain Spine, where thunderstorms will be numerous.

More triple-digit heat will be common for the Mississippi Valley, with 90s blanketing everywhere else in the Plains and Midwest. St. Louis, Chicago, Minneapolis, and Indianapolis to Nashville, Tenn., will all hit the century-club. However, there will be some much-needed relief, with scattered showers and thunderstorms dotting the Great Lakes and Ohio and Tennessee valleys. Unfortunately, some of these will be severe, carrying damaging wind gusts and large hail.
The only place spared the extreme, even dangerous heat will be the northern High Plains. Temperatures will rise into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees, but will come at the expense of a few dangerous storms later this afternoon and evening. The biggest concerns will be large hail and damaging wind gusts, but an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out either.
Rapid City and Aberdeen, S.D., Chicago, Detroit, Cleveland and Cincinnati, and Louisville, Ky., are all in the severe weather danger zone.
The heat will remain entrenched all the way to the Atlantic Shores, with widespread 90s and 100s found from New York City to Miami. The hotspot will be the eastern Carolinas where 100s are expected in many locations. Even New York City and Washington, D.C. will see highs into the middle and upper 90s. Once again, the only cooling relief will be in the form of afternoon showers and storms in the Southeast.
If you want to escape the blazing heat and storms, head west. The Pacific Coast will stay dry from the Northwest to the Mexican border. Coastal California will see plenty of sun with highs in the 70s from San Francisco to Los Angeles. Further inland, temperatures will quickly warm to the upper 80s, 90s, and 100s in the deserts. The Desert Southwest will actually get a little reprieve, with highs only ranging from the upper 90s to around 100 degrees.
The only Western weather hiccup will be found along the Rocky Front Range Spine, where numerous showers and thunderstorms will threaten afternoon and evening outdoor plans. The mercury will rise into the 70s and 80s for the most part, with upper 60s in the highest peaks.
