Today's Weather Outlook

By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Seth Carrier | A long, snaking cold front stretching from the Northeast all the way to west Texas will control the weather for the eastern half of the U.S. today. Heavy rain showers will spread into the Northeast, with scattered severe storms possible in western Texas and southern New Mexico. Meanwhile, the opposite will be true for most of the West, where pleasant weather will reign.

The cold front, nearly stationary, will provide the spark to kick off severe storms from southwest Texas to southern New Mexico today. Daytime heating will produce a soupy atmosphere with plenty of energy for storm formation. In addition, speedy upper-level winds will lend a hand in intensifying storms that fire up. As a result, cities such as El Paso and Del Rio, Texas, and Las Cruces, N.M., will have to brace for dangerous storms that could produce damaging wind gusts and large hail.
The same cold front will extend all the way through the Deep South and up the spine of the Appalachians to the eastern Great Lakes. Plentiful moisture in the eastern and southern U.S. will team up with the front to produce showers and thunderstorms from Louisiana all the way to New England.
The cold front won`t be the only weather system to cause rainfall today. Residents of the Northern Plains may have their afternoon interrupted by an upper-level disturbance kicking off a few showers in the Twin Cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, with showers drenching the Michigan Upper Peninsula and Green Bay, Wis.
The West will enjoy glorious weather today, in stark contrast to the active pattern in the East. High pressure will dominate from the Pacific Northwest through the central Rockies and Great Basin. Any morning fog blanketing the beaches of southern California should give way to afternoon sun.
The coolest weather in the U.S. will be in New England and the Great Lakes, with temperatures only cracking the 50s and low 60s. Pleasant 60s and 70s will dominate the Mid-Atlantic through the Plains and into the Northwest. Highs will zoom into the 80s from the Deep South into the Southwest deserts.
