Severe Storms Bust East Coast Record Heat
UPDATED 8:15 PM EDT, June 22, 2012
UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Chad Merrill
The broiling, record-breaking heat that has been baking the East Coast is getting shattered by a strong cold front this evening. The front is coming with a price, generating powerful thunderstorms that are packing damaging wind gusts.
A sharp cold front sliding across the Appalachians is bringing much cooler and drier air eastbound ahead of the hot, steamy 90-degree air invading the East Coast. The clash of these two air masses is igniting thunderstorms from the Appalachians to the Mid-Atlantic Coast.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch continues along the Interstate 95 corridor from southern Virginia into southern New Jersey. Richmond, Va., Washington, D.C., Baltimore, and Philadelphia are all included. The biggest threat with the storms will be damaging wind gusts up to 60 mph, though their slow-moving nature could trigger heavy rainfall and a heightened flash flood threat.
Widespread wind damage has been reported in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic this afternoon from the storms. Places like Hurt, Va., Lenox, N.Y., and Lewisburg, Pa., reported trees down. Hail up to golf ball size plagued places like Pittston, Pa., and West Creek, N.H.
In the wake of the cold front this weekend, high pressure will swoop in and bring a return of refreshing temperatures to the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast. While residents across the Mid-Atlantic see the mercury slide back into the middle and upper 80s, it will be even more delightful across New England. Here, high temperatures will manage the upper 70s and lower 80s this weekend.
