By WeatherBug Meteorologist, John Bateman | A storm system that brought heavy rain to the Gulf Coast is now soaking large stretches of the East Coast. Strong thunderstorms will be found once again in Texas while the Southwest bakes in triple digit heat.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Todd Nelson has the latest in his exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
The same weather system that tallied 4 to 8 inches in the southern Plains this past weekend is slowly inching north along the Appalachian spine today. Drought-busting rain will drench Florida to Maine with several inches likely. Despite the extensive rain and cloud-cover, temperature across the East will be mild, with 80s in the Southeast, 70s through the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast and upper 60s in northern New England.
Scattered thunderstorms with locally heavy rain, wind, and hail could pepper the landscape in west Texas today. The Big Bend area will be under the gun for some of those severe storms during the afternoon while more general type showers and storms cover most of the rest of central Texas and eastern New Mexico. Temperatures in the Southern Plains and Southern Rockies will warm to the 70s and 80s.
Elsewhere, mainly dry and sunny weather is expected. The Southwest will cook with Phoenix seeing highs just shy of its record 107 degrees for the day. Highs climbing well into the 80s will also challenge records in Portland, Ore., while Seattle stays just shy of 80 degrees. However, those going out on rivers and streams in the Northwest should keep in mind that water temperatures remain in the 40s.
A stray shower could fall in northern California and southern Oregon, but the remainder of the West will see warm and dry May weather. Highs along coastal California will hit the 60s and 70s, with 80s and 90s farther inland.
The Great Lakes, Northern and Central Plains will see mostly sunny skies and temperatures warming into the 70s and 80s. The Intermountain West will also see sunny skies and afternoon highs in the 80s.
