Family of Bears Storm Northeast Pa. Weather Report
April 24, 2012
By Rebekah Brown, The Times-Tribune, Scranton, Pa.

A group of black bears turned the weather into news on the WNEP set Monday night.

At 11:10 p.m., meteorologist Kurt Aaron was forced inside when four black bears, which appeared to be a mother and three cubs, walked onto the outdoor set. When he realized the bears were 10 feet away, Mr. Aaron said he "ran like I stole something."

Mr. Aaron completed his weather forecast indoors while the bears, unaware that they were interrupting, roamed the set.

"I had always been told it's best not to run," Mr. Aaron said, but he disregarded that advice when he realized he was "closer to the bear than I was to getting back to the building."

His wallet, which contained his access card, was lying next to the door, so he was able to grab it and get inside without disturbing his uninvited guests.

"I didn't realize how fast I could run for a 44-year-old guy," he said.

It wasn't the first time wildlife had strolled in "the backyard." Foxes, raccoons and skunks have made appearances, but before the 11 p.m. news Monday, the closest a bear had ever been was in between the backyard and Marvelous Muggs Restaurant, Mr. Aaron explained.

Officials, including the head engineer, will meet today to start discussing how to prevent a repeat visit from the black bears.

"I've never been that close to a live mama bear and her cubs," Mr. Aaron said. "It was an experience."
