Severe Storms Target Mid-Atlantic, Plains
UPDATED 10:30 PM EDT, July 28, 2012
UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Seth Carrier
Strong thunderstorms continue to roll along the Interstate 95 corridor tonight with damaging wind gusts and large hail. Additional storms are socking the Central Plains of Kansas and Nebraska.
Warm and humid air in place across the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic today sparked strong storms along a cold front that is still chugging toward the East Coast. Dangerous storms continue to plow through central New Jersey and the Delmarva Peninsula this evening. An additional line of storms is racing across central North Carolina on a beeline for Cape Hatteras. The biggest threats from these storms continue to be damaging wind gusts and large hail.
Farther west, a warm front draped across the nation`s midsection is acting as a trigger for strong storms this evening in the Central Plains. The front is ramming into hot and unstable air, causing powerful storms to erupt in northern Kansas.
Fortunately, the threat for strong storms will diminish later tonight as temperatures drop and the atmosphere becomes more stable.
Many severe weather reports came in today due to the strong storms facing residents of the East Coast and Plains. Golf ball size hail pummeled Upper Marlboro, Md., while a 69 mph gust was recorded at Atlantic City Airport in New Jersey. A wind gust in Pfafftown, N.C., toppled a 250-year-old tree, and numerous trees came down in El Dorado, Ark.
