Powerful Storms Streak Across Interior Northeast

UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Chad Merrill | A wild day of storms is slowly winding down across the interior Northeast, as a cold front slides slowly to the south and east into New England and upstate New York. Large hail and damaging winds will accompany these storms through the overnight hours. Not to be left out, a fresh severe threat will develop just before sunrise across the Midwest and Plains.
A broad area of warm and humid air has been allowed to bubble northward, reaching the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast today. This muggy air mass has fueled the atmosphere, just awaiting a trigger to develop thunderstorms. The trigger is being provided by a cold front, which is currently draped from western Maine to southwestern Michigan.
Along and to the south of the front, powerful storms are forming, producing hail and damaging wind gusts from Maine to upstate New York. A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is in effect from northeastern Pennsylvania into western Maine, including New York City, Albany, N.Y., Burlington, Vt., and Portland, Maine.
Tennis ball sized hail hit Glen, N.Y., earlier today, with egg sized hail in New Haven Mills, Vt. A 70 mph gust plowed through Whippleville, N.Y., while nearby Malone, N.Y., clocked a 63 mph gust.
Not to be left out, a fresh boundary will form along the tail end of the cold front between the western Great Lakes and northern Rockies. These storms will form in a very hot and humid air mass that has become all too common across the Plains this summer. Storms will multiply overnight, congealing into a line of strong-to-severe thunderstorms that will march eastward as Tuesday morning approaches.
Residents may get an early wake-up call in numerous cities across the central U.S., including Glasgow, Mont., Rapid City, S.D., Minneapolis, Chicago, and Indianapolis.
Since the front will slowly migrate south Tuesday, some of the same places are at risk for fresh storms for the second day of the work week. The target zone for severe weather will be along and south of Interstate 70 in the Midwest to the Carolina Coast. Cities such as Indianapolis, Cincinnati, Charleston, W.Va., and Richmond, Va., could see a fresh round of hail and gusty winds Tuesday afternoon.
