UPDATED By WeatherBug's Matthew Mehallow
There will be no doubt that it`s late July as searing heat continues across the southern Plains and Middle Mississippi Valley today and summer thunderstorms breakout from the northern Plains into the Northeast.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Todd Nelson has the latest in this exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
Warm temperatures and pockets of scattered severe thunderstorms with locally heavy rain, wind, and hail will spread from the Ohio Valley into the Mid-Atlantic today. The main areas of thunderstorms will develop along a surface cold front bringing heavy rainfall, large hail and gusty winds. Localized rainfall amounts up to two inches are possible from Indianapolis to Raleigh, N.C.
Record temperatures are expected across the Plains, where July sunshine will boost the mercury into the triple-digits. From Texas to the Dakotas, temperatures will warm into the upper 90s to the 100s. However, residents in the northern High Plains could see severe storms in the afternoon. These severe storms could impact outdoor plans from Minot, N.D., to Rapid City, S.D., with gusty winds and large hail.
The summer monsoon will provide the Desert Southwest with a smattering of afternoon thunderstorms from the Mexican border north to Salt Lake City and Denver. Even Phoenix could see a stray shower or thunderstorm cooling things off a bit this afternoon. Highs will range from the upper 80s to the low 100s in Arizona, Utah, Colorado and New Mexico.
In between hit-or-miss thunderstorms, the Great Lakes and Northeast will see peaks of sunshine. Highs will climb into the 80s. The other tranquil weather spots include the West Coast, where temperatures will range from the 60s and 70s along the Interstate 5 corridor, to the 80s and 90s in the Intermountain West.
