Today's Weather Outlook

UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Seth Carrier | The U.S. will be a tale of two halves today. Summer-like heat and sun will bake the Great Plains from south Texas to North Dakota, while the East Coast shivers under clouds, showers and blustery winds.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Todd Nelson has the latest in this exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
A high pressure ridge stretching from Mexico to Canada will open the door for well-above average temperatures to take hold throughout The Plains and along the Front Range of the Rockies. Residents from El Paso, Texas, to Denver and Pierre, S.D., will bake under sunny skies and high temperatures well into the 80s and 90s. This will put many Plains cities 15 to 25 degrees above normal today. The good news is that humidity levels will remain low, so it will feel less stifling than typical mid-summer heat.
The opposite scenario will play out along the East Coast. Chilly Canadian air that brought snow to the Eastern Great Lakes will remain entrenched from Maine to the southern Appalachians. This, combined with blustery winds will make jackets a requirement from Burlington, Vt., to Pittsburgh, Pa., and Elkins, W.Va. In addition, scattered showers and gray skies will make for a dreary day across the Northeast, with temperatures only reaching into the 40s and 50s.
Elsewhere, a few pop-up thunderstorms will interrupt the afternoon along the spine of the Rockies, from Montana to New Mexico. The Pacific Northwest will contend with scattered showers, but they will only be a nuisance. Meanwhile, afternoon showers will roll through the Tennessee Valley from Kentucky to North Carolina, while gloomy low clouds will make for a gray day in Southern California.
Aside from the chilly Northeast and balmy Plains, pleasant, but cool weather will be the rule in the Southeast and Florida, with temperatures in the 60s and low 70s. Widespread 70s will dominate the Mountain West, with 60s and 70s along the West Coast.
