By WeatherBug Meteorologist, John Bateman | Severe weather will not take a break for the beginning of the workweek as storms fire from the Upper Midwest to the Great Lakes. Meanwhile, sizzling temperatures will spread from the Desert Southwest, through the High Plains and into the nation`s midsection. If you want sunny skies and pleasant temperatures, head to the West Coast or Northeast.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Todd Nelson has the latest in her exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
A storm system moving along the Northern Tier will drape a cold front across the Northern Plains and a warm front along the Great Lakes. This will trigger more strong-to-severe storms in the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes today. Cities like Minneapolis, Milwaukee, and Detroit will all see chances for damaging winds and large hail from any storms that develop. Around this severe weather risk, more scattered showers and thunderstorms will pop-up in the daytime heating from the Dakotas to the Mid-Atlantic. Temperatures will generally warm to the middle 80s across the Upper Midwest and Great Lakes, with the exception of Chicago, which will hit the 90s, with cooler 70s and 80s in the Mid-Atlantic.
Speaking of the 90s, those digits will be common across the central U.S., with triple-digits in the Desert Southwest. A bubble of heat will surge northeastward, bringing temperatures into the upper 90s as far north as Omaha, Neb., and Des Moines, Iowa. Not to be outdone, the High Plains and Southern Plains will hit the middle 90s, and the Southwest will sizzle with a high over 110 degrees in Phoenix! The entire region will generally be mostly sunny-to-sunny, with the nearest rain chances along the Gulf Coast of Texas.
If you want to escape the summer heat, humidity, and storms then head east or west. The Northeast will see plenty of sunshine thanks to high pressure anchored off the coast. Temperatures will generally hit the middle 70s to low 80s from the interior Northeast to coastal New England. Heading west, the Pacific Coast will stay dry, except for the Northwest, as both Seattle and Portland, Ore., see shower chances. Coastal California will see some morning fog and afternoon sun with highs in the 60s and 70s. Farther inland, temperatures will quickly warm to the 80s and 90s.
