By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Seth Carrier | Another active weather day is on tap for the East. A moisture-rich storm will continue its slow progression into New England, while severe storms rage in the Western Great Lakes. Meanwhile, the West will continue to bake under summer-like temperatures.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Todd Nelson has the latest in his exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
A broad storm that began its trek across the South a couple days ago will continue to slowly meander into the Northeast today. This system is loaded with moisture, so it will dump large rain amounts from Maryland to northern New England. While major Interstate 95 cities such as New York and Boston will likely avoid the brunt of the precipitation, places farther inland like Scranton, Pa., Albany, N.Y., and Montpelier, Vt., could be swimming in up to 2 inches of rainfall.
While the Northeast will endure a steady rain today, more violent weather will take up residence in the Western Great Lakes. An upper-level disturbance will race across central Canada towards Lake Superior. This will team up with a surface cold front moving through Wisconsin and Iowa to scour out moist air and fire up dangerous storms. Cities such as Chicago, Milwaukee and Green Bay, Wis., will be in the danger zone for afternoon storms capable of producing powerful wind gusts and damaging hail.
With high pressure dominating the West, it will be warmth rather than rain on the weather menu today. The heat jackpot will be located in the Desert Southwest, where temperatures will climb into triple digits from Phoenix to southwest Arizona and far southeast California. Toasty weather will even climb up the Pacific Coast, where widespread 80s will dominate from Portland, Ore., to Boise, Idaho. Here, today`s highs will be 10 to 20 degrees above normal. That said, humidity levels will remain low, making the heat a bit more bearable.
The coolest temperatures in the U.S. will inhabit New England and the Northern Great Lakes, where 60s will be the rule. Comfortable temperatures in the 70s will dominate a large swath of the Mid-Atlantic to Northern Plains, while seasonable 80s will hold on throughout the Southeast.
