UPDATED By WeatherBug Sr. Meteorologist, James West | The busy weather pattern this week will continue at full throttle today. Skies will rumble through the Upper Mississippi Valley and Northern Plains while hot and windy weather creates the perfect recipe for wildfire danger in the Southwest and southern Plains. A smattering of showers and storms will soak parts of the East once again while umbrellas will be needed again in the Northwest.

The same cold front responsible for severe weather in the Northern Plains Tuesday will take a run into the Upper Mississippi Valley today. Similar to Tuesday, warm, humid air clashing with cooler, drier air will initiate thunderstorms capable of large hail and damaging winds from southern Minnesota into northern Kansas.
Air conditioners will be humming in the Southwest and Southern Plains as temperatures reach into the triple digits in places like Phoenix while Amarillo, Texas, will take a run at 100 degrees. Gusty southwest winds and low humidity combined with the heat will ramp up the brush fire risk all across the Southwest and southern Rockies.
A pesky upper-level low will prompt a smattering of afternoon thunderstorms and showers that could delay or postpone outdoor sports matches. Places like Hartford, Conn., Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Nashville, Tenn., and Orlando, Fla., could be in line for a few quick heavy downpours.
The Northwest and Northern Rockies can`t shake out of their soggy, cool pattern. Wednesday will be no different with showers and a few snow flurries mixed in at the highest elevations. Highs will only top out in the 40s and 50s with a few pockets of 30s.
Highs will zoom into the 90s across the Central Plains ahead of a vigorous cold front while upper 80s will greet the Southeast. Temperatures will be cooler from the Dakotas into the Ohio Valley, Mid-Atlantic and Northeast where upper 70s to middle 80s will be common to round out the middle of the work week.
