By WeatherBug Meteorologist, John Bateman | Large stretches of the East Coast that continue to run a rainfall deficit will be greeted by more showers and a few thunderstorms during the midweek. A few of the storms may even be severe for a sliver of western New England and eastern New York. The heat which set records in places like Portland, Ore., and Quillayute, Wash., on Monday will continue to get squashed today. Meanwhile, a few showers could briefly interrupt outdoor plans in the Mountain West.

Moisture and warm temperatures in place will help foster much needed scattered showers and scattered thunderstorms from New Orleans to Miami and north along the coast into Maine. Not everyone will get a downpour, but where the rain comes down, a quick half inch is possible.
The strongest of these storms will roll through western New England and eastern New York State. A cold front will race across the region in the afternoon and slam into unstable air already in place. Cities such as Hartford, Conn., Albany, N.Y., and Burlington, Vt., will be at risk to see damaging wind gusts and even some hail before the storms fizzle out in the evening.
The upper 80s that baked the Northwest will become a thing of the past. Highs will only climb into the 60s and 70s along the Northwest Coast today but abundance sunshine is expected.
A weak upper-level wave will help trigger scattered afternoon showers from the northern Great Basin into the northern and central Rockies. Otherwise, sunshine will be in full force from the West Coast through the Southwest into the Plains and Great Lakes. Gusty southerly winds will rocket through the Plains west of Interstate 29.
Triple digits will once again bake southern California into southern Arizona while 80s and even a few scorching 90s dot the landscape from the Sacramento Valley to the East Coast. The exceptions will be the typical cooler Cascades, Sierra, Rockies, Great Lakes and northern New England where cooler 60s will feel refreshing.
