UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Fred Allen | The Northwest, Nation`s Heartland, and the Northeast will see downpours and even a few fresh thunderstorms to close out a busy weather week. The recent spring heat will remain locked in place for the Southwest and Gulf Coast, while one last gasp of cooler weather slides into the U.S. Northern-Tier.

The recent uptick in severe weather won`t show any signs of letting up across the central High Plains for the last day of the workweek. Strong-to-severe thunderstorms carrying very large hail and destructive winds will be the chief concerns for McCook and Sidney, Neb., Goodland and Colby, Kan., and for Fort Morgan, Colo., this afternoon and evening.
Even the Dakotas into the Lone Star State will see a few crawling downpours and thunderstorms later today into this evening. Through all the showers and thunderstorms striking the Central U.S., the mercury will be quite comfortable with a range from the 60s in the Dakotas, to the 80s and very low 90s across the Texas Rio Grande Valley.
The weather story will play out similarly across the Eastern Seaboard as well. A lumbering storm system will squeeze out heavy rain and a few thunderstorms for the Interstate 81 and 95 corridors across the Mid-Atlantic, northern Appalachian Spine, and Northeast. A few showers and thunderstorms will also be found across the eastern Carolinas and the Sunshine State today.
Highs will range from the chilly 50s in upstate New York and interior New England, to the 60s along the Interstate 95 corridor from Washington D.C., to Boston. Those across the Southeast will see the mercury warm into the 70s and 80s, with southern Florida hitting the lower 90s today.
Meanwhile, California to the Rockies, and the Great Lakes to the Gulf Coast will enjoy plenty of late-May sunshine but highly changeable temperatures. The only weather hiccup within the quiet weather will be found in the Northwest, where a few showers will work inland off the moist Pacific Ocean.
The coolest air will be found in the Great Lakes, northern Appalachian Spine, and upstate New York into northwestern New England, where highs will struggle to get out of the 40s and 50s. The northern Rocky Front Range will also see 50s, while the Arizona and California to New Mexico deserts will soar into the 80s, 90s, and even a few 100+ degree readings cannot be discounted. In between, it will be 60s and 70s.
