Weekend Weather Outlook
6:45 AM EDT, June 2, 2012
By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Seth Carrier
Skies will brighten up a bit following an active weather week for the U.S. A storm system that drenched much of the Midwest and Eastern U.S. will depart into Canada. Cool and unsettled weather will rule in the Northwest, with severe storms targeting the Southern Plains.
Today:
The southern-High Plains will be at the forefront of the active weather today. Storms will fire in the afternoon from eastern Colorado to the Texas Panhandle with the potential to produce large hail and damaging wind gusts.
Meanwhile, the rest of the Heartland will bask in early June sunshine and warm temperatures. Highs will range from the mid 90s in South Texas to the 70s and 80s in the Dakotas.
A low pressure system planting itself over southern Canada will bring stormy weather for those across the Northeast. Substantial rain will fall from New York to Caribou, Maine. Even a few thunderstorms will form ahead of the warm front in Boston. The rain will keep temperatures in check with highs in the 60s and 70s from Baltimore to Boston.
Cool and wet weather could put a damper on outdoor plans in the Northwest. Temperatures won`t rise much as highs top out in the 60s.
Elsewhere, a fine June day will be in the offering with only a few weather hiccups. Morning sunshine will give way to a few rumbles of thunder in the afternoon across the Intermountain West and Northern Rockies where highs will climb into the 70s and 80s. The West Coast with the exception of Washington will be sunny and dry with highs in the 60s and 70s along the coast, and 80s and 90s inland. The Southwest will be hot and dry, with highs in the triple digits.
Sunday:
Scattered showers will once again roam the Great Lakes and Northeast. Daytime heating will trigger a few isolated afternoon thunderstorms across the upper Ohio Valley. All the clouds and showers will give air conditioners a rest with highs ranging from the upper 70s in Maryland to the 60s and lower 70s across New York and Massachusetts.
High pressure will dominate the Southeast and provide mostly sunny skies with highs in the 80s and 90s. A few scattered showers and storms may interrupt outdoor plans in the Plains, including the chance for severe storms in eastern Kansas. Temperatures here will rise into 80s and 90s. One exception will be the Pacific Northwest where a few showers may fall in the afternoon.
Other than a few showers from the Pacific Northwest to Northern Rockies, much of the West will be sunny with highs generally in the 70s and 80s; cooler 60s will be found along the coast. Heat will bake the California deserts and Southwest where the mercury will flirt with the century mark in places like Phoenix and Las Vegas.
