UPDATED By WeatherBug Sr. Meteorologist, James West
Severe weather will be poised to strike the Southern Plains today, while additional garden-variety type thunderstorms and showers slide across the South and Midwest. Meanwhile, summer heat will expand north and east along with the chances for rain.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Todd Nelson has the latest in his exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
A cold front sliding out of the Rockies will help to spark strong thunderstorms across the Southern Plains, with some locations getting pounded by large hail and high winds. The storms are expected to pop-up along the front through eastern New Mexico and west Texas, as another round of severe storms fires up in the Mid-South. Temperatures across the Southern Plains and Lower Mississippi Valley will be hot, with temperatures generally in the upper 80s to upper 90s.
The storm system kicking off the severe weather will also be responsible for producing scattered showers and thunderstorms across the Midwest, Great Lakes, and South as the whole system slides eastward. Once again, more heavy rain could be squeezed out across the Southeast. Temperatures will be warming a bit, with highs ranging from the mid-80s to the lower 90s from the Gulf Coast to Michigan.
Elsewhere, the Northeast will be pleasant with abundant sunshine and warm weather. Temperatures will vary quite a bit, from the middle 70s along the New England coast to near 90 degrees in the Mid-Atlantic. The Central and Northern Plains will be comfortable with a chance of showers in the Dakotas and sunshine elsewhere. California will be sunny with highs in the 70s and 80s along the coast, and 90s to near 100 inland. The Desert Southwest will be sunny and hot with highs hovering around the century mark.
