Weekend Weather Outlook

UPDATED By WeatherBug Meteorologist, Seth Carrier | While large stretches of the U.S. enjoy sunshine and warm mid-May weather, the southern Rockies, Mississippi Valley and Southeast will have to contend with on-and-off downpours and storms.
WeatherBug Meteorologist Gretchen Mishek has the latest in her exclusive WeatherBug National Outlook.
Today:
The weekend will get off to a soggy and stormy start from the southern Rockies into the Southeast while much of the West, Northern Tier and East Coast reap the benefits of sunshine.
The heaviest rain will pelt the Gulf Coast and Lower Mississippi Valley with more scattered, garden-variety storms on tap from Colorado Springs, Colo., to Birmingham, Ala. A few more scattered showers will sneak into the Central Rockies, Midwest and southern Great Lakes by day`s end.
High pressure will bring stellar weather up and down Interstate 5 along the West Coast, across much of the Northern Tier and for the East Coast.
Highs will approach the century mark in southern California and southern Arizona, including downtown Phoenix. Otherwise, the mercury will rise into the 70s and 80s from the Northwest into the Southern Plains and for large stretches of the East. Air conditioners will get a bit of a break from the Central Rockies to the Great Lakes and northern reaches of New England where highs will stay in the 50s and 60s.
Sunday:
The weather pattern will remain in gridlock to end the weekend. While more storms interrupt outdoor plans in the southern Rockies, Southern Plains and Southeast, the West and Northern Tier will see worry-free weather.
Similar to Saturday, storms and showers will bubble in the warm, humid air along and south of a nearly stationary front draped from the southern Rockies to the Tennessee Valley. A few of the ski resorts in western Colorado could see some snowflakes mix in early, and again late, in the day.
Places like Denver, Albuquerque, N.M., Little Rock, Ark., Memphis, Tenn., and Tampa, Fla., will have to be on the lookout for threatening skies. A few storms will even creep into the Ohio Valley and northern Appalachians later in the day.
The Southwest and southern California valleys will sizzle again Sunday. Phoenix will tack on a few degrees from Saturday, likely reaching the lower 100s. Otherwise, dry weather will caress the West, Northern Tier and East Coast.
The East Coast will tack on a few degrees from Saturday`s readings, with highs once again in the upper 70s to the 80s. The Southeast and Florida will generally see highs in the low-to-mid 80s with widespread 70s through the Plains and Mountain West.
